The basic rule is that controlled waste should be removed by an authorised waste carrier to the point of disposal. This includes: sanitary waste, nappy & clinical waste, sharps boxes.
However there are many services that can be done DIY and can offer great savings for your organisation.
Washroom items that can be done DIY are:
- Air fresheners
- Urinal sanitizers
- Vending
- Soap
- Water management
- Hand dryers
- Hygiene bags
All can be installed and maintained by yourself. Doing all of these items yourself may not be your cup of tea but even if you do some of them yourself there are still good potential savings to be made.
As a simple example an air freshener on service could cost approximately £100 pa. Quality units can be purchase for around £30 or less and a years refills for around £50. This offers a typical saving in the first year of £20 per unit, and £50 for subsequent years.

Service company operatives will have training, innoculations against hepatitis B.

| Can't towels simply be flushed down the loo? |

Flushing sanitary towels down the toilet can block drains, either yours or further down the line.
Also even if it didn't block the drains it would end up polluting the environment.
The Water Industries Act 1991 states that no items should be flushed that could cause a blockage within a sewer or a drain.
